Lipiflow is a revolutionary treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), which accounts for 90% of Dry Eye cases. in the U.S.

What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

This condition causes a blockage in the minuscule Meibomian glands in your eyelids. Every time you blink, these glands release droplets of oil into the lipid layer of the tear film, which acts to keep your eyes lubricated. If you aren’t blinking enough, the oil gets trapped in the glands, causing a blockage. Without enough oil being released by the Meibomian glands, your tears evaporate too quickly from the surface of your eyes, resulting in Dry Eye Syndrome.

If you have MGD, you may experience some or all of the symptoms below:

  • A stinging, burning or gritty sensation in your eyes
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Irritated, inflamed and/or red eyelids
  • The inner rims of your eyelids appearing rough or uneven
  • Blurry vision
  • Intolerance to contact lenses due to discomfort

These symptoms may worsen when you spend extended periods of time using a digital screen or are exposed to dry air due to air conditioning or indoor heating.

What is Lipiflow?

Lipiflow procedure is a non-invasive, painless and highly effective way to treat Dry Eye Syndrome caused by MGD. It has quickly set the standard of care for treatment, thanks to its safe and quick results. Lipiflow has also proven to aid contact lens wearers who are experiencing discomfort.

Our expert eye surgeons have a wealth of experience when it comes to using Lipiflow treatment, with a high patient satisfaction rate that speaks for itself in terms of lasting success.

How does Lipiflow Dry Eye treatment work?

Lipiflow Dry Eye treatment works by gently warming the inner rims of your eyelids and massaging the outer rims of your eyelids.

Just before your Lipiflow procedure, you will be given numbing eye drops to keep you as comfortable as possible during the treatment.

Following this, two activators which are designed to protect the surface of your eyes, will be placed over and under the eyelids, so they are solely focused on the Meibomian glands. Gentle heat and pressure are then delivered in pulses into the glands to safely remove any blockages. The entire procedure takes just 12 minutes and doesn’t require any recovery time, so you can go about your day afterwards as usual.

As your Meibomian glands return to normal function, more oils will be secreted to improve the quality of your tears and ease your Dry Eye symptoms.

If you have Dry Eye Syndrome caused by MGD or a contact lens intolerance, you can expect to see the maximum effects of Lipiflow 6–8 weeks after your treatment. MGD is a chronic condition, which means you will likely need to repeat Lipiflow treatment in the future.

The effects of this treatment have been shown to last for up to 2 years, allowing you to enjoy day to day activities without having to suffer with persistent MGD symptoms.
