You’re not yet a candidate for vision correction surgery. Eye surgeons have (rightfully) limited the approval to those 18 years of age and older.
Our eyes as a child are still developing. The amount of nearsightedness or farsightedness may change as we grow and develop. Your prescription is generally stable by age 18 and older. An evaluation is in order to determine stability. We all have slight variability to our glasses prescription, but rarely does it significantly progress after your late teens to early 20s.
Take good care of your eyes by removing your contacts every day and giving your eyes a rest. Don’t put them in your mouth and back in your eyes. Don’t make them last for months by using disposables for a super long time. I know it’s hard, but if you had seen what I’ve seen, you’d be careful! Infections from contacts can and do leave vision damaging scars that cannot be fixed.
Cataract Surgery or RLE is best for you.
LASIK or PRK would be your best option!
If you have a “PLUS” sign (+) next to your contact lenses, LASIK and PRK are usually the best options.
For extreme farsightedness (+4 or higher), a refractive lens exchange procedure (RLE) may be a good option.
ICL is not an option in the United States for “plus” or hyperopia prescriptions.
LASIK or PRK is right for you!
If your prescription is between 0 and -3, you have myopia and are in a category that has over 99% chance of perfect results with LASIK or PRK. These surgeries are generally even better when you’re under 45, because you won’t have to worry about reading glasses. You can have it all!
LASIK or PRK is right for you!
If your prescription is -3 to -6, you are in the sweet spot! You have myopia and are in a category that has a 96% chance of perfect vision with LASIK and PRK.
You may be a candidate for ICL, but most of the time LASIK or PRK will get you the best results with the lowest risk and lowest cost.
ICL may be your best option.
With this level of myopia, we start thinking about recommending the ICL procedure. Sometimes your anatomy makes the decision for us. That is, if your cornea is too thin, we may consider recommending the ICL, which has no minimum corneal thickness requirement.
If your anterior chamber depth (the space between the back of your cornea and the front of your natural lens) is inadequate for ICL, we may recommend LASIK or PRK. Sometimes both are possible, sometimes neither.
This is why we can’t work from home! We need to see you and examine you with our extremely highly specialized equipment to assess these factors.
ICL or RLE would work for you.
If your prescription is over -10, you have a very high level of myopia. LASIK and PRK are not good options in my opinion. But no worries! Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) are potentially excellent options to get out of glasses. You guessed it: we need to see you in office, and soon, for you to make glasses a thing of the past.

It’s the only way to know exactly which vision correction option- LASIK, PRK, ICL, RLE or Cataract Removal- is perfect for you.
RLE is best for you!
LASIK or PRK would be best for you!
If your prescription is between 0 and -3, you have myopia and are in a category that has over 99% chance of perfect results! LASIK or PRK will get you the best results with the lowest risk and lowest cost.
Presbyopia starts to show up in this age category, meaning you need reading glasses to see up close. If that’s an issue for you, we can do Monovision surgery. This is just a fancy word for doing LASIK or PRK on one eye for distance and one eye for near vision. It sounds strange but our patients love it! We will give you a contact lens to wear for a week or so to simulate your new vision.
FYI: There is no surgery to restore both near and far vision in both your lenses. To get that vision back, we would replace you lens with a new multifocal one. That is RLE and also a great option.
